A trunk showing of the beautiful hand-appliqued quilts of Alice Ernest, a quilt teacher from Granbury, was the highlight of the January meeting. The "Twelve Days of Christmas" quilt on the right was her first quilt, started when she and her husband were transferred to Canada and she finally had time in her life to pursue quilting. This quilt took several years to complete but started her on a quilting adventure. Although she helps prepare quilt kits for Houston Street Mercantile and teaches classes there, Alice believes quilters should add a little of their own personality by adding a different fabric or changing some of the design to make it more personal. She also stressed the importance of the actual quilting of the quilt and how it can make or break the final product. After trying all the different hand applique methods that she could find, Alice primarily uses a freezer paper technique which she shared with the group. Her quilts were amazing!
