October 2015 Block of the Month

Millie Schwab presented the BOM this month.

Whirling Geese



Whirling Geese
Skill Level CONFIDENT BEGINNER
Finished Size 9" x 9"


Cutting Instructions  
Red fabric (Orange or brown)
    4 rectangles-- 3 1/2" x 6 1/2" 

Black ( brown)
    1 square-- 3 1/2" x 3 1/2"

Black Print ( off white or tone on tone)
   
8 squares-- 3 1/2" x 3 1/2"

Assembling the Block
Step 1. Draw diagonal line on wrong side of black print 3 1/2˝ square. Referring to Diagram I, place marked square on red rectangle, right sides together, aligning raw edges. Stitch on drawn line; trim away and discard excess fabric. Open and press. Repeat on opposite corner to make pieced rectangle. Make 4.

Step 2. Referring to Diagram II, join pieced rectangle and black square using a partial seam. Sew from edge to middle of black square and backstitch.

Step 3. Add 2 more pieced rectangles (Diagram III).

Step 4. Join last pieced rectangle along long side. Sew from outside of block to partial seam created in Step 1 to create Whirling Geese Block (Diagram IV).
