Sewing Kit Workshop after March 20 business meeting
On March 20th, after a short meeting and a trunk show, Gretchen Abston
will conduct a workshop on a wool sewing kit. The wool for the kit will be furnished by the guild. A fee of $3.00 is necessary for the extras that we will use in the workshop.

The deadline to sign up for the workshop is March 1st. A supply list
will be posted on March 3rd.

Desert Star Table Runner Workshop on Wednesday, March 21
On March 20th, after the sewing kit workshop, we will cut our fabric for the Desert Star workshop. The workshop for the Desert Star will be held on March 21st at 9:30.

The fee for the workshop is $42.00. Yes, that is right! Because we had so many sign up we got a discount. If you do not show up, you still have to pay for $12 for the complete quilt pattern.

The patterns have been special ordered for you.

On each workshop day bring a sack lunch and drink.

The January program of the Brownwood Quilters Guild was presented by guild member and president, Angela McCorkle, owner of Quilts With A Heart in Priddy, Tx. Angela demonstrated several new rulers that she brought home from market including one for a Lemoyne Star and the Rapid Fire Hunter's Star ruler. Both of these rulers save time and make these star blocks much easier. We also enjoyed a trunk show of Angela's beautiful quilts. Very inspiring! After the trunk show we were able to shop Quilts With A Heart as Angela brought her store with her. Thanks for a great program Angela!

Directions

Using your favorite method, make the following flying geese

1. Medium Pink and white Flying Geese: 1 – 3” x 6” (finished)

2. Medium Pink and white flying Geese: 2 – 1 ½” x 3” (finished)

3. Light Pink and white flying geese: 2 – 1 ½” x 3” (finished)

Using your favorite method, make 2 white and light pink half square triangles 3” finished.

From red fabric cut 4 – 3 ½” x 6 ½” rectangles (finished 3”x6”).

From the Medium Pink Fabric cut 1 – 2” x 6 ½” rectangle (finished 1 ½”x6”).

From the Light Pink Fabric cut 2 – 2” x 6 ½” rectangles (finished 1 ½”x6”).

Lay the assembled half square triangles, flying geese, and rectangles according to the diagram above.

Block should finish 12” (12 ½” unfinished).

Blocks will form a second heart pattern when set together.

December 2011 Meeting

For the December 2011 meeting of the Brownwood Quilters Guild we enjoyed a wonderful Christmas party. After a short business meeting and Show and Tell, members showed their favorite Christmas quilts and there were lots of door prizes. We played the game Left, Right, Center with stacks of fat quarters as the prize and had three lucky winners. Sherry Benbow, Terri Reed and Millie Schwab. We enjoyed a delicious pot luck lunch with lots of goodies in addition to good visiting with friends.

JANUARY MEETING BROWNWOOD QUILTERS GUILD

The January 17, 2012 meeting of the Brownwood Quilters Guild was called to order by President Angela McCorkle. There were 23 members and 2 guests present.

The minutes of the December Meeting were read. Sherrie Marshall moved they be approved as read. LaTrelle Locks seconded and motion carried. The Treasurer’s Report was given. Ruby Goodwin moved they be accepted as presented. Nancy Tubb seconded the motion; motion carried.

Sunshine report was given. Pat Murph may come back to OakRidge. Peggy Gamblin is in the hospital, Jeanie Ortegon has moved, and Daisy Huntsinger is doing well after her surgery Nancy Tubb reported CPS bags are needed. Joy Ivy reported more WeeCare quilts are needed. Marcella reported the February program will be Doris Rice, March will be a wool sewing kit and the following day on Wednesday there will be a table runner class. April there will be no program, just Quilt Show business, and May will be a program from Judy Laquidara.

Angela McCorkle reported members are needed to sell tickets for the donation quilt. Bethany Bletsch is going to take it to the Gun Show. Posters are ready at Moore Printing. Letters will go out in March for entries. Priddy Ag department will make us more racks. We have sold the old racks to Barb’s Quilt Nook in Kingsland. An ad as been placed in the Tea In Texas Magazine. T-shirts will not be the heat set design. They will be sky blue v-neck except for size 2X. LaTrelle will need the order at the February meeting. Re-usable shopping bags will be printed and distributed to the first 100 quilt show attendees. Vendors will pay for business card advertising on one side of bag and our show logo will be on the other side of the bag. Vendors can put their business card on the website for free if they advertise on the bag. Charlie will be contacted to put a visitor counter on the website as well as facebook exposure.

Discussion was held concerning a pattern design exclusive to the Quilt Show by members with pre-cuts and kits and sales going directly to the Guild. It was decided to table the discussion for this year due to lack of time to properly prepare. Angela will look into business cards to promote the show and guild and pens to give out. Banners will be made and go up in four places in town April 1st promoting the show date. Doris Rice moved that we have a theme for our show this year. Marcella League seconded; motion carried. It was moved by Nancy Tubb the theme be Friends Across Texas and must have predominate friendship stars in the quilt and can be any size. Bethany Bletsch seconded the motion; motion carried.

Angela McCorkle announced that this would be her last year as an officer and would like to change the bylaws to add the quilt show chair to the signature card at the bank. It will be presented again at the February meeting. There was some discussion concerning the children’s category. It was tabled until the February meeting also.

Show and tell items were presented by Alice Young, Benita Pipes, LaNelle (visitor). Photos can be seen on the guild website. The block exchange drawing was won by Donene Fullagar. Door Prizes were won by Jonna Burkes and Alice Young. Fat Quarters were won by Becky Martin. Doris will email next month’s block and it will also be on the website. The coffee social hostess for February is Jeanie Ortegon. Meeting was adjourned to the program presented by Angela McCorkle with Quilts With A Heart. She presented ruler demonstrations.

DECEMBER MEETING BROWNWOOD QUILTERS GUILD

The December 13, 2011 meeting of the Brownwood Quilters Guild was called to order by President Angela McCorkle. There were 22 members and 1 guest present.

The minutes of the October Meeting were read. LaTrelle Locks moved they be approved as read. Ruby Goodwin seconded and motion carried. The November Minutes were read. The following corrections were made to the November Meeting minutes. Ray Tipton and Sunny Modawell from the Brownwood Chamber of Commerce discussed the Hotel/Motel Tax and Advertising dollars that they contribute to our Guild for the Quilt Show and appropriate use of them. There were also 23 pillow cases contributed and 24 WeeCare Quilts distributed. Sherri Marshall moved to approve the minutes with the corrections. Joy Ivy seconded and motion carried.

LaTrelle Locks moved to accept the Treasurer’s report as posted. Nancy Tubb seconded and motion carried. Joy Ivy delivered 5 WeeCare Quilts. Sherry Benbow reported get well cards were sent to Daisy Huntsinger and Pat Murph.

Joy Ivy will host the coffee social for the January Guild meeting. The block for January is a 12 ½” (12” finished) Sampler Star of your choice made from red and white fabrics. Angela McCorkle will present the program for January. A workshop in the afternoon will be held on the String Star. Contact Angela for a list of supplies needed to bring and also bring your own lunch. The fat quarter for Jan is black on white or white on black.

Show and Tell were Millie, Doris, and Angela. Pictures may be seen on the Guild website.

Stella Tinkler, guest, and played Christmas music on the piano while we ate. Members donated to Toys for Kids and played the Left, Right, Center Game with the winner receiving a large supply of fat quarters contributed by each player.

November 2011 Meeting

The program for the November meeting of the Brownwood Quilters Guild was presented by Janie Alonzo of Zo-Ray Creations (www.zoraycreations.com). Janie demonstated the X-Block rulers for us and brought some beautiful sample quilts for us to see. There are many things that can be done with these rulers!

NOVEMBER MEETING

BROWNWOOD QUILTERS GUILD

The November 15, 2011 meeting of the Brownwood Quilters Guild was called to order by President Angela McCorkle. There were 28 members and 1 visitor present.

Angela reported that vendor letters for the quilt show went out. We will be doing the Quilt Show Passport again. It was general consensus that we will make the ribbons again this year. The 2012 Donation Quilt is done. Anyone who would like to take it to shows, set up at the mall, etc. is welcome and encouraged to do so.

The Christmas party will be held for the month of December. The guild will provide the brisket cooked by Bud McCorkle, and each member is to bring a covered dish. We will play Left, Right, Center Game for entertainment. Each member is to bring 4 fat quarters to play the game. Each member is also to bring a toy for Toys for Kids Drive, and in lieu of bringing a gift for Angela, she encouraged members to bring another toy instead. The following people volunteered to decorate a tree: Marcella, LaTrelle, Angela, Doniene, and Ruby.

LaTrelle is looking into screen print t-shirts instead of heat transfer. It was also discussed to have show pins for sale.

Show and Tell items were shown by Stella Burns, Bethany Bletsch, Daisy Huntsinger, Mille Schwab, Angela McCorkle. Pictures can be seen on the guild website.

Meeting was adjourned to the program by ZoRay Creations on the “XBlock” Door prizes were won by Doris, Ruby, Karen, Bethany, and Joy Early and Mille. Fat Quarters were won by LaTrelle. Blocks for the month were won by Becky Martin.

Guild members Benita Pipes and Norma Bessent presented a program on irons and ironing. Benita shared part of her collection of antique irons as she gave a history of irons. Norma gave us information on proper techniques of ironing, the difference between ironing and pressing, and when to iron. An Oliso Smart Iron Pro was the door prize for the meeting. Joy Ivy was the lucky winner!

The Guild provided enough flannel to make one four part block and Jonna showed us how to make a raw-edge Flannel Posey quilt. Very low stress and lots of fun! Thanks so much Jonna! The Guild provided a lunch of sandwiches and chips with a wonderful banana pudding for dessert.

Minutes for September 20, 2011 Meeting

The meeting was called to order at 9:30 AM by President Angela McCorkle. In the absence of Secretary/Treasurer Doris Rice, Angela called the roll. Twenty-eight members and 2 visitors were present. The visitors were Doniene Fullager from Brady and Dixie Franklin, who has recently moved to Brownwood from Boerne. The hostesses for the meeting, Nancy Tubb and Bethany Bletsch, were thanked.

Minutes from the August meeting were read. LaTrelle Locks made the motion to accept the minutes as read, and Marilyn DeHay seconded. Motion carried. The Treasurer’s Report was sent via email to members. Joyce Kelley made the motion to approve this report, and Ruby Goodwin seconded. Motion carried.

Committee Reports:

Sunshine
Sherry Benbow sent a card to Pat Murph. Pat has been moved from the hospital to Oak Ridge Manor.

CPS
Nancy Tubb reported that even though CPS still has a few pillowcases, more would be appreciated. Kitty with CPS also requested baby quilts, if the guild is able to fulfill its commitment to the hospital for the WEE Care program. Nancy has patterns for the pillowcases and asked members to consider using good quality fabrics that are appropriate for all age groups since pre-teens and teens are also included in the CPS program. Sherri Marshall suggested that we bring sewing machines and stay after a meeting to make some pillowcases. Marcella League said that next month would be a good time to do this since no workshop is scheduled. Members who participate will need to bring their own lunches.

Program
Marcella League reported that next month’s program, presented by Benita Pipes, will be on Irons of the Past, Present, and Future – to Press or not to Press. A special iron will be given away. All members present can put their names in the drawing for this iron. Anyone who brings a WEE Care quilt can put their name in twice! The November meeting will be presented by ZoRay Creations on the Twist Block.

WEE Care
Joy Ivy reported that we need quilts. The sizes of the quilts can vary since some are used for infants while others are used for older children who come to the Pediatric Emergency Room. Several members brought quilts but more are needed.

Quilt Show
Angela reported that vendor letters will be going out this month. Kat Atley , Stamps by Kate, will be doing the workshop; cost of $40 per person includes a kit and her teaching fee. The guild will save about $200 by giving her a booth at the show in lieu of a fee for the Saturday afternoon lecture.

Angela will check with Betsy Hutchins, a Texas author and quilter, about her availability for the 2013 show.

Sunnie from the Brownwood Chamber of Commerce Tourism Board will meet with members after the October meeting. She will requirements of receiving Chamber grants for the Heart of Texas Quilt Show.

Joyce Kelley has 52 blocks that contain the state names and flowers. The blocks are hand-embroidered, and Joyce has sashing and everything needed to finish the quilt. She will sell it to the guild for $100 if we want to use it for the 2013 donation quilt. The members present were in agreement with this proposal. A check for $100 will be given to Joyce.

General Business

Doris Rice will be the Chair of the committee for the Quilt Display the second week in November. We will be allowed to sell tickets for our donation quilt at this event, which will be Friday afternoon and all day Saturday. Doris will be scheduling members for time slots during this event.

Church personnel are working to clear off the stage area. There is fabric which was donated by Sylvia Wilson. Nancy and Joy encouraged members to look at this fabric with their respective Community Projects in mind. For any fabric not selected, Patsy Oehrlein and Joy Ivy volunteered to take the fabric to Howard Payne for Baptist Mission work in Mexico.

Announcements
There will be a Quilt Trunk Show in Dublin on October 8 from 10:00 – 3:30. Cost of the event is $5.00, with the proceeds being used toward the replacement of the church air conditioning.

The Courthouse Steps Quilters will have their annual show in Goldthwaite on October 15; 10:00 – 4:00. To celebrate the twentieth anniversary of this group, there will be a special category in the show for Courthouse Steps quilts. Both events will be added to the calendar on the guild website.

New Business
Patsy Oehrlein, who won the guild quilt, expressed her appreciation, stating that she has never won anything!

Nancy Tubb gave instructions and showed an example of the October Block of the Month. It will be a 12 ½ inch unfinished block called the Maple Star. It is made of squares, rectangles, and 4 flying geese in 2 fabrics that remind us of fall plus a cream background fabric.

Block of the Month

One member each month will volunteer to demonstrate the construction of a quilt block pattern and provide copies of the pattern to guild members. The following month, each member who makes the block will bring it to the guild meeting and be eligible to win all the blocks provided! Guild member, Nancy Tubb, presented the program for the August meeting of the Brownwood Quilters Guild. Members brought their machines and the guild supplied kits to make a "Hot Dog Pillowcase". Nancy presented this technique which creates a pillowcase with no raw edges. The guild also supplied a pizza lunch. This was a great time of sewing and visiting.

A big thank you to Nancy Tubb for the wonderful workshop! We are looking forward to the September workshop with Jonna Burkes. Ask a busy person to do something and you get a job well done!

AUGUST MEETING

BROWNWOOD QUILTERS GUILD

The August 16th, 2011 meeting of the Brownwood Quilters Guild was called to order by Pres. Angela McCorkle. There were 26 members present. Sherri Marshall moved and Nancy Tubb seconded that minutes from the July meeting be approved as posted. Mildred Turner moved and Joy Ivy seconded that the treasurer’s report be approved as posted.

Sunshine Report from Sherry Benbow reported a get well card was sent to Pat Karnes . Joyce Kelley reported her husband will have back surgery soon.

Joy Ivy reported that we need quilts for the Wee Care Project. Angela McCorkle reported not much was happening with the Quilt Show right now. Vendor letters will go out in September. The Marketing person at the Chamber will meet with Angela in October after the meeting to discuss other possible avenues to promote the quilt show.

Fay Johnson donated a bag of scraps if someone will come and get them from her. Angela has her phone number if you are interested. Joy Early has ties to donate to make a quilt also.

The Arts and Crafts Show is the second weekend in November at the Coliseum. We have been given 3 booths to set up and sell raffle tickets for our donation quilt and promote the guild and the art of quilting. Doris Rice is in charge of the set up. Shelia, Marcella, Joy Ivy, Marilyn and Sherri Marshall volunteered to help her.

There is an issue concerning emailing minutes. It currently is the policy of the guild to email the minutes to members so that it takes up less business time at the meetings. After discussion, it was moved by Joy Early that minutes will be read at the meetings and emailed to members. LaTrelle Locks seconded it and motion carried.

If you have not paid dues, please do so no later than Sept. meeting. Your name will be removed from the roster if not paid by then.

Jonna Burkes will present the program next month on Flannel Pinwheel Posey Quilt. There is no charge for the program, the guild provides the supplies needed to complete 2 blocks plus lunch. Each member will need to provide their own drink.

The July meeting of the Brownwood Quilters Guild was held the 3rd Tuesday of the month and it was time for our annual July Luncheon. Our Vice President, Marcella League, handed out bags with themed table decorations the previous month and each table committee was to use these decorations for their tables. There was a prize awarded to the best decorated table. There was a magic theme table decorated by Ruby Goodwin. A Texas theme table decorated by Terri Reed. A beach party table

decorated by Jonna Burkes. A construction theme table decorated by Sherri Marshalll and Joy Ivy. And a chabby chic table decorated by Benita Pipes.
Judges were appointed and the prize went to Benita Pipes for the "Chabby Chic gone wild" table.

JULY 19, 2011 MEETING

BROWNWOOD QUILTERS GUILD

The July 19th, 2011 meeting of the Brownwood Quilters Guild was called to order by Pres. Angela McCorkle. There were 26 members and 3 guests present. Ruby Goodwin moved and Marcella League seconded that minutes from the June meeting be approved as posted. LaTrelle Locks moved and Joy Ivy seconded that the treasurer’s report be approved as posted.

It was reported to the Sunshine Committee that we might send Maxine Vaughn a get well card. CPS Bags committee had nothing to report. Joy Ivy reported the Wee Care still needs quilts.

Pres. Angela McCorkle reported that she had been contacted by the Chamber of Commerce requesting the Guild be present at the Chamber of Commerce Arts & Crafts Show in November at the Coliseum. They are requesting we set up a small quilt show of about 20-30 quilts and conduct demos throughout the day. The discussion was tabled until more information from the chamber was received.

Marcella League reported on the schedule of programs for 2011-2012. Next month’s program will be “Hot Dog Pillowcases. The Guild will be purchasing the supplies needed for each member present and proving pizza and salad. Members are to bring their sewing machines and a drink to go with lunch.

The June program for the Brownwood Quilters Guild was presented by Sonja Banister of Dublin, Tx. She brought many wonderful quilts with her to show us how she uses decorative stitches and machine embroidery to quilt her quilts. Sonja also gave us an informative hand-out with tips on how to do this successfully. Many of us were inspired to go home and try this on our own machines. Thanks to Sonja for a wonderful program!

Also the drawing was held for the winner of the Guild quilt and this year's lucky winner is Patsy Oehrlein! Congratulations Patsy!

The June 21st, 2011 meeting of the Brownwood Quilters Guild was called to order by Pres. Angela McCorkle. There were 26 members and 2 guests present. Joy Ivy reported that we need quilts for the Wee Care Project. Brown County Child Advocacy Center requested that we make quilts for them. Although this will not be a guild project, if anyone would like to make a quilt, Angela has the contact name if you want to make one.

Sherry Benbow reported that a get well card was sent to Pat Murph, a thinking of you card to Jeani Ortegon, a sympathy card to Becky Martin. It was announced that Maxine Vaughn had hip surgery.

Angela McCorkle reported that there is no quilt show activity to report. She passed around a SongBird Retreat Brochure in Kingsland TX. The Quilt Show Goodie Basket winner gave the guild a $10 donation for mailing the goodie basket and sent a thank you. Town and Country Quilt Guild will host a program and workshop on June 23rd in Stephenville featuring Michelle Watts and her Southwest quilts. A thank you note was read from Joan Lampkin.

The next guild meeting is July 19 and is our Annual Banquet. There will be no coffee social and the meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m. instead of 9:30 a.m. The meat will be provided for the banquet and everyone is to bring a covered dish. Five people were needed to decorate for the banquet using the items in their “brown bag” they were given. They are Sherri Marshall, Ruby Goodwin, Teresa Reed, Jonna Burkes, and Benita Pipes.

Guild Donation to Buckmasters

The above quilt was donated to Buckmasters. This quilt top was among the things donated to the guild by Cleo Needler's family. Angela McCorkle added the borders and quilted it and donated it on behalf of the guild. Buckmasters is an organization that raises money to give children, handicapped individuals and wounded warriors the opportunity to hunt. This quilt was auctioned for $575.00.

MAY 17TH 2011 MEETING
BROWNWOOD QUILTERS GUILD

The May 17th, 2011 meeting of the Brownwood Quilters Guild was called to order by Pres. Angela McCorkle. There were 29 members present. LaTrelle Locks moved and Bethany Bletsch seconded that minutes from the April meeting be approved as posted. Joyce Kelley moved and Karen Reed seconded that the treasurer’s report be approved as corrected. Members are reminded to pay their dues and complete the Membership Information Form.

Sunshine Report was given by Sherry Benbow. A sympathy card was sent to Joan Lampkin, whose husband passed away. Nancy Tubb reported that last month was revealed on the large mystery quilt and Mille Schwab showed hers. This month is the last month on the small mystery quilt. Wanda Jackson and Lynn Patrick showed theirs. Ruby Goodwin had no report for CPS Project. Joy Ivy reported that they are out of quilts for Wee Care and need more. Joy showed 3 she has already made.

Discussion was held concerning changing show date to Friday and Saturday and the Vendor Shop Hop. It was the consensus to leave the show dates as is (Sat. & Sun.) and to try the Vendor Shop Hop again. Vendor food will go back to the Hospitality Room and a committee to prepare it. Pam McGhee and Bertha Hall former night guild members will chair it. It was agreed that the judged portion of the quilt show was a success for the first year and Angela hopes to find a different critique sheet for 2012. More comments were wanted from the judge. Judged quilt show entry fees will need to be increased next year. We will continue to use the Early Chamber of Commerce for the workshop meeting place. Stamps by Kate will be the workshop for 2012. Mille Schwab has white denim type fabric she will donate to use as seperators between the quilts. Marcella suggested a “Bed Turning”. She volunteered to be in charge of it. Doris Rice will work with Mildred Turner on a bookkeeping system for check out in the stash booth. There were numerous door prizes left over from the quilt show and it was suggested they be donated to the guild and used as monthly door prizes. Sherri Marshall will contact TX DOT on requirements for a banner at the traffic T for 2012. Norma Bessent and Benita Pipes will do an analysis on advertising on the Quilt Show.

At this meeting, members will sign up for a workshop on making pillowcases. This workshop will be held immediately following the August meeting. A kit will be provided for all who sign up, but members must attend the workshop in order to receive the kit.

Following the business meeting, there will be a workshop, taught by Nancy Tubb, on making pillowcases. Be sure to bring sewing machines and basic supplies needed to make this project. Pizza and salad will be provided for lunch. Each member is to bring her own drink.

Jonna Burkes will present the program on the Flannel Pinwheel Posy Quilt. Members can register from now until September 8th. 2011 QUILT SHOW RESULTS

Pictured above is a quilt entered by Joy Early from Bangs, Texas named “Serendipity”, and was selected Best of Show, won first place in it’s category by the viewer’s and received a second place ribbon in the judged division at the Seventh Annual Heart of Texas Quilt Show held April 30th and May 1st at the Brownwood Coliseum. Attendee’s on Saturday voted on their favorite quilt in each category and their favorite overall. Joy’s quilt was selected as the overall viewer’s favorite quilt from 110 entries. This quilt pattern was designed by Jonna Burkes and quilted by Angela McCorkle. All of these women are members of the Brownwood Quilter’s Guild which goes to show that it takes a village to make a quilt!

This year we also offered participants the opportunity to have their quilts critiqued by a quilt judge. This year’s judge was Fran Snay from Burleson, Texas. She awarded 1st through 3rd place ribbons in each category and two overall awards; Judge’s Choice – Judged Division and Judge’s Favorite Overall selected from all the quilt entries, judged or not. The winner of the Judge’s Choice – Judged Division was Rebecca Yarbrough from Nacogdoches, Texas for her Millefiori Revival which was hand quilted by Creative Christians. The winner of the Judge’s Favorite Overall went to Kitty Miller from Lakeway, Texas for her May Flowers entry quilted by Angela McCorkle, Priddy, Texas.

The winner of the Guild Choice Ribbon went to Joyce Kelley from Early, Texas for her County Journal entry in category 800.

The quilt raffle was won by Shelly Turner of Brownwood, Texas. The Quilter’s Goodie Basket was won by Rose Martine from San Angelo, Texas.

The Brownwood Quilter’s Guild would like to thank the many volunteers of the guild (and our wonderful husbands) and businesses who helped make this event possible, specifically, the Brownwood Chamber of Commerce, Mills County State Bank, and the Brownwood Bulletin for their outstanding coverage of our show. We would also like to thank the vendors at our show and the students from the Priddy High School Ag class who made our new metal display racks this year. The show was a great success and the guild looks forward to an even better show next year. The April meeting of the Brownwood Quilters Guild consisted mostly of business pertaining to the 7th Annual Heart of Texas Quilt Show to be held at the end of this month. We did start out with a time to relax and visit with coffee and cookies provided by Marilyn DeHay and Marcella League. Thanks ladies!
The Guild was shown the show ribbons that will be presented to the winners in each catagory. Also sign up sheets were passed around for members to sign up to work in different areas during the show. Just a few days away!

The meeting of the Brownwood Quilters Guild was called to order at 9:30 AM, April 19, 2011, by president Angela McCorkle.

Roll was called. No visitors were present.

Sunshine Report was presented by Sherry Benbow. Judy Tiedemann recently underwent Gall Bladder surgery and is doing well.

Meeting minutes from the March 15, 2011 meeting were discussed. Bethany Bletsch made the motion to accept the minutes as revised. Joy Ivy seconded the motion, motion carried.

Treasurer's report was presented by Angela McCorkle. Due to several comments she received from guild members about the guild being "broke", Angela explained how to read the Treasurer's Report and reassured the members that the guild has sufficient operating funds and funds for programs and that we are not operating in the red. Nancy Tubb made the motion to accept the Treasurer's report as read. Marcella League seconded the motion, motion carried.

Standing Committee Reports:

1. Mystery Block Reveal. Joyce Kelley showed her completed queen sized top. Millie Schwab showed her blocks that are completed and ready to assemble. No other participants have finished their projects. The reveal for the smaller mystery quilt will be next month.

2. Quilt Show report was presented by Angela McCorkle as follows:

• First Place ribbons are ready and were available for members to see. The persons on the committee were Sherri Marshall, Latrelle Locks, Pat Murph and Angela McCorkle. Second and third place ribbons along with the participant ribbons have been ordered and should be here prior to the show. In addition, there will be a first, second and third place ribbon awarded to the quilts in each category in the judged division. There are two big judge awards, the Judge's Choice for the best judged quilted and the Judge's Favorite from all quilts entered in the show, judged or not.

• Vendor food will be purchased from the coliseum concession stand. There will be tuna salad, chicken salad, pimento cheese and baked potatoes. The vendors will be given an ordered form and a volunteer will collect the orders, and take them to the vendors and the vendors will then have the option to eat in their booth or to take it to the hospitality room. The food will be purchased by the guild.

• Entry/Program - 92 quilts. The due date has been extended to Friday, April 22nd.

• Stash booth - Mildred Turner and Judy Tiedemann

• Door Prizes/ Goodie Basket - Angela McCorkle - some door prizes have been received and thank you notes been sent.

• Project Booth - Joy Ivy and Jeanie Ortegon volunteered to set up the project booth this year.

• Raffle Quilt - Joyce Kelley reported that the Raffle quilt has brought $1500.00+ thanks to the efforts of Mildred Turner and other members helping sell the tickets.

• Raffle quilt for 2012 - Angela McCorkle - We will have the blocks available at the next meeting for those who wish to stay and sew on the 2012 quilt after the meeting.

• Vendor Goodie Bags - Doris Rice

• We will have 20 new metal quilt racks available for the show. After the show, we will go ahead and spend another $500.00 for an additional 20 racks before the price of metal increases again. It was suggested that the wooden racks be sold to Barb's Quilt Nook when they inquired about renting them for their next show.

3. Hospitality Report - Nothing to report

4. Program Activity Report - This month's program was canceled due to a death in the family of the program presenter.

5. CPS Project - Nothing to report

6. Wee Care - Joy Ivy reported that she has received only one quilt but that the hospital currently was not in need of any additional quilts. Marcella League suggested that if we had an overflow we consider giving some to CPS or other entities that could use them. Marcella also suggested that our donations be quilts, since we are a quilt guild.

General/New Business:

1. Block Exchange - Last month Tricia Emery volunteered to do a 9 month star sampler and everyone would make a block and keep their own block. This issue was revisited this month. After discussion it was decided that instead of one person being in charge of the entire year, a different member each month would sign up to do the block. Example, the program will start in September. The member signing up for September will have block instructions and a completed block to show members at the August meeting. Members who wish to participate will make the block and return it to the September meeting. All blocks will go into a drawing, one winner will receive all blocks. Members are free to make a second block for their own personal use.

2. Sherri Marshall shared ideas for the fat quarter exchange for next year. A sheet of fat quarter colors and guidelines for next year was given to members.

3. Dues are payable in May. Everyone paying dues ($24.00) will be eligible for a quilt kit drawing at the June meeting. Jonna Burkes volunteered to select a quilt kit for the drawing. The quilt kit should not exceed $100.00.

4. The Nominating Committee for new officers was selected and consists of Sherri Marshall, Norma Bessent, and LaTrelle Locks. Their recommendations will be presented at the next meeting.

5. Coffee Social - A coffee social was available for folks who like to show up at 9:00 AM before the regular meeting. Coffee and cookies were enjoyed by all. Marcella made the motion to continue the social and Jeannie Ortegon seconded. Volunteers are needed to make the coffee and bring goodies and clean up after. A sign up sheet was available for those who wished to volunteer.

6. Programs/Workshops - Ideas for programs and workshops were discussed. The role of the Vice President is to coordinate the programs for the guild for the coming year. In an effort to assist this person with this job, when you renew your guild membership you will be requested to complete an information sheet. This will consists of your name, address, phone number, email address, birthday and suggestions for programs you would like to see, programs you would be available to present, workshops you would like to attend and workshops you would like to facilitate. This information will help the VP acquire programs based on what the majority of the members would like to see.

7. Angela McCorkle reported that the guild was asked to donate a quilt for a silent auction at the Buckmasters event to be held on May 21st. Back in December Joyce Kelley was contacted by the family of a former member who passed away who wanted to donate her quilt things to the guild. Among these things were several blocks, quilts in progress and other fabrics. We will use one of the quilt tops she had constructed, Angela will quilt it and donate it to the Buckmasters event.

8. Sherri Marshall brought in the quilt stash of Lois Scott. She is going into a nursing home facility and wanted to donate her quilt things to the guild. The members were asked to take what they wanted and the remainder would be sold in the stash sale with the money going to the guild.

Show 'n Tell:

1. Mildred showed a quilt she completed using strips she acquired in the guild strip exchange.

2. Joyce Kelley shared her expertly appliqued Roosters quilt.

3. Joy Ivy showed her granddaughter's T-shirt quilt. Mildred did embroidery on the top border and the top was quilted by Sally Brown. Joy also showed a quilt she had cross stitched years earlier.

4. Sherry Benbow finished a college graduation gift quilt for her granddaughter Amanda.

Monthly Drawings:

• The fat quarter drawing was won by Nancy Tubb. The color for May will be those colors that remind one of a sunset.

• Door Prizes were won by Karen Reed, Pat Murph, and Joy Early.

Program:

• No program was presented this month.

March 2011 Meeting

Joyce Griggers of Dublin, TX presented

the program at the March meeting of the

Brownwood Quilters Guild. Joyce and Rita Crouch

are the Cotton Pickin' Chicks and they are certified

teachers of the Cotton Theory method of

quiltingmaking. Cotton Theory quilting allows you

to quilt as you go and also creates a quilt that is

reversible when finished. It can be done on any

home sewing machine and is a wonderful

opportunity to use all those decorative stitches!

In these first two pictures Joyce is showing the two

sides of one project. You can also adapt this

method to traditional quilt blocks making it easier to

quilt it yourself. Joyce teaches a class once a

month at The Flying Needle in Stephenville. She is

also available for workshops.

1. Mystery Block - Nancy Tubb brought the instructions for step 6 for the queen quilt and the crib quilt.

I'm sure everyone joins me in applauding Mildred's efforts in selling tickets. She's definitely gone above and beyond the call of duty.

• T-shirts for 2011 quilt show are available in pink. Contact Angela McCorkle to purchase yours.

• The workshop will be presented by Fran Snay on Saturday at the Chamber of Commer Confernce Room and on Sunday at the Senior Citizen Center. The workshop fee is $40.00 per person, a supply list will be provided after registrations are received. The fee for the Senior Citizen Center is $85.00 for the four hour period. The Chamber room is free of charge.

* Set-up for the show will be Thursday April 28. Sherri Marshall volunteered to take the pictures of all the quilts, to be put on a CD and sold at the show for $5.00 each.

* The show will be April 30th 10-5 and May 1st 12-4.

• Angela discussed having Stamps by Kate conduct the workshop and lecture for next year. Tricia Emery made the motion to have Stamps by Kate conduct the workshop and lecture and Lynn Patrick seconded. Motion carried.

Wee Care - Joy Ivy was presented several little knitted bonnets by Marcella League.

New Business:

• Tricia Emery volunteered to present the project of the month for next year. It will be a 9 month star sampler.

Fat Quarter Exchange
Just a few things to keep in mind when participating in the monthly fat quarter drawing: first, a fat quarter is approx. 18” x 22”.

• You can buy fat quarters already cut from the fabric store or buy half a yard of fabric and cut it down the middle. This way you are building your stash and on the months you don’t win, you still have a piece of the fabric you put in the drawing!

• You can put your name in the drawing once for each fat quarter you contribute. If you bring one, your name goes in once, you bring two then your name goes in twice, etc. Of course the more people who participate, the more fabric is in the pot.

• If there are fewer than six fat quarters in the pot we will wait until the following month and combine the fabric and names and then draw. So encourage everyone to participate.

• You will be given a list of fat quarter colors or themes for the year but we will also try to announce the color for the following month at the meetings.

• Please make sure that your fat quarter is 100% cotton fabric and that it is clean and pressed. Now I don’t mean washed – just clean. Some people don’t want their fabric washed before they use it.

• If you are unsure about what the list is asking for just do your best. There are no wrong answers!!

• All of the entry slips will be held until the end of the year, and we will have another drawing at that time for a quilting pattern book.

• For every fat quarter you contribute to the drawing during the year that is one time that your name goes in to the drawing for the book.

• So good luck and have fun!

Meeting Minutes

The February 15, 2011 meeting was called to order by Angela McCorkle, president, at 10:00 AM.

Roll was called. Twenty-two members were present. Everyone welcomed second time visitor Pat Kieselhorst.

1. Sunshine Report - Sherry Benbow reported that all is well.

2. The January program was presented by Angela.

3. Meeting Minutes from January 18th were read by Angela and opened for discussion. Joy Ivy made the motion to accept the minutes as read. Mildred Turner seconded the motion, motion carried.

4. Treasurer's Report was presented by Angela. Sherri Marshall made the motion to accept the report as written. LaTrelle Locks seconded the motion, motion carried. Joyce Kelley will assume treasurer's duties in Doris's absence until new officers are elected.

1. Mystery Block - Nancy Tubb: Step 5 of the mystery quilts was made available.

2. Quilt Show Report was presented by Angela. Joyce Kelley reported that Mildred and Judy will be taking the raffle quilt to Hamilton March 28th to sell tickets. $731.00 has been raised thus far.

1. Joyce Kelley reported that the program for next month will be Cotton Theory by Joyce Griggers.

JANUARY 18, 2011 MEETING

BROWNWOOD QUILTERS GUILD

The January 18, 2011 meeting of the Brownwood Quilters Guild was called to order by President Angela McCorkle. There were 23 members present. Ruby Goodwin moved and LaTrelle Locks seconded that minutes from the December meeting be approved as read. Sherri Marshall moved we approve the treasurer’s report as read and Nancy Tubb seconded. Both motions carried.

Sherry Benbow, Sunshine Chairman, reported that a sympathy card was sent to Leola Hatfield family and Barbara Spinks family. Get well cards were sent to Becky Martin and Mary Alice Young.

Angela McCorkle reported there were 12 confirmed vendors for the Quilt Show.

Joyce Kelley reported that February meeting will be a luncheon and Secret Sisters revealed.

The time change for the meeting was discussed again. Angela will send out an email to let everyone know we will vote on the issue in February.

January 2011 Meeting

Angela McCorkle, Quilts With a Heart, presented the program for the January meeting of the Brownwood Quilters Guild. Angela brought several beautiful quilts that were made with quick techniques and shared those techniques with us.

She demonstrated how the Tossed Nine Patch goes together from charm squares or from your own scrappy 5" squares. Also the Cinnamon Swirl pattern. Both of these patterns are from Eleanor Burns.

She also showed us a quick method for making Flying Geese. With this method you end up with four completed Flying Geese. This method is used in Fat Quarter Stars, a quilt designed by Angela.

She also brought a quilt made by the Strip Tubing technique and demonstrated how the blocks were made by sewing together strips and a coordinating fabric into tubes and then cutting them apart with the Strip Tube ruler.

After the demonstration guild members were invited to shop. Angela brought a good selection of fabric, notions and kits from her store and it was very tempting to everyone! Thanks Angela for a great program.

November 2010 Meeting

The 2011 donation quilt is ready to go! It is a queen size quilt, 90" x 110", made of 1930's reproduction fabrics. The center blocks were pieced by members of the guild, the outer border was needleturn appliqued by Joyce Kelly and it was quilted by Angela McCorkle. It really turned out to be a beautiful quilt! We have a spot reserved at the mall for the next several weekends to display the quilt and sell tickets. Give Mildred Turner a call to get on the schedule for that! Tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. The drawing will be held on May 1, 2011.

Marcia Kaylakie of Austin, Tx presented the program for the November meeting of the Brownwood Quilters Guild. Marcia is a quilter, collector, quilt judge and certified quilt appraiser. She told us the things that a judge looks for in a quilt during judging. While most people might be hesitant to enter their quilt in a judged show for fear of criticism, she told us that judges look for things to compliment as well as suggest areas that might need improvement. Marcia shared her own quilts with us and pointed out the things in them that she, as a judge, would comment on. It was a very informative program and a pleasure to meet Marcia.

NOVEMBER 16, 2010 MEETING
BROWNWOOD QUILTERS GUILD

The November 16, 2010 meeting of the Brownwood Quilters Guild was called to order by President Angela McCorkle. There were 30 members and 3 guests present. Bethany Bletsch moved and Pauline McBride seconded that minutes from the October meeting be approved as posted. Lynn Patrick moved we approve the treasurer’s report as posted and Terri Reed seconded. Both motions carried.

Sherry Benbow, Sunshine Chairman, reported that no cards were sent this last month.

Angela reiterated that the Quilt Show dates have been changed to April 30th and May 1st, 2011 due to a conflict with Easter.

Lynn Patrick reported the Hospitality Committee met about the Christmas party. The party will be held on the regular meeting day and time in December. Each member is to bring a covered dish. Angela’s husband will cook the brisket. Those who wish to participate in the gift exchange need to bring a quilt related gift under $20. Also each member is to bring the lipstick you wear for a fun activity the committee is planning. It was brought to the members’ attention that the December meeting is the Tuesday before Christmas. After discussion, it was decided to change the meeting date for December to the second Tuesday. The December meeting and Christmas Party will be December 14th.

Ruby Goodwin reported that the drawstring is available for CPS bags and several bags were donated at the meeting.

Several members of the Town and Country quilt guild in Stephenville were our special guests at the October meeting of the Brownwood Quilters guild. These ladies brought their raffle quilt as well as some personal quilts to share with us during our monthly Show and Tell. We certainly enjoyed this time with them.

Judith Lester from San Angelo brought the program at this months meeting. She has published many designs and she talked to us about working with wool. She is the owner of the Wool 'N' Cotton Shop in San Angelo and a retired school teacher as well as a contributor to the Wool Street Journal. She brought some beautiful wool applique as well as some wool rug hooking projects. She delivered a very inspirational talk about our life as quilters - Quilt Is A Five Letter Word - during which she introduced us to the term "womanship" which is the fellowship between women.

OCTOBER MEETING
BROWNWOOD QUILTERS GUILD

The October 19, 2010 meeting of the Brownwood Quilters Guild was called to order by President Angela McCorkle. There were 30 members and 2 guests present. Also, there were 5 visitors from the Stephenville Town and Country Guild. After a correction to the date of the last meeting, Lynn Patrick moved and Bethany Bletsch seconded that minutes from the September meeting be approved. Joyce Kelley moved we approve the treasurer’s report as posted and Marilyn DeHay seconded. Both motions carried. Angela McCorkle reported that, due to an oversight, the church had not been paid for this fiscal year. A check for the full amount was presented to the church after the meeting.

Sherry Benbow, Sunshine Chairman, reported that cards were sent to Foncille Rolling and Ruby Goodwin. After some discussion, a motion was made by LaTrelle Locks and seconded by Sherri Marshall to send a $50 floral arrangement or make a charitable donation in the event of a death of a Guild member or their spouse. A donation will be made to “The Gideon International” in honor of Ruby Goodwin’s husband who passed away last week.

Joyce Kelley reported the program for November will be Marcia Kaylackie, quilt appraiser. Members that want appraisals done should contact Joyce Kelley. The cost of each appraisal will be $45 per quilt.

Joy Ivy reported 15 receiving blankets and 5 quilts have been delivered to the hospital. Angela McCorkle reported that some members had experienced problems with printing of the label sent out by e-mail. Also, special fabric or fabric treatment needs to be done to the muslin to prevent the ink from washing out. It was decided that Jonna Burkes will print out the labels and be compensated for the supplies.

Jeannie Ortegon reported CPS is in need of additional bags primarily for ages six and up.

Angela reported that the website advertising committee still hasn’t met but will do so in the near future.

SEPTEMBER MEETING
BROWNWOOD QUILTERS GUILD

The September 21st, 2010 meeting of the Brownwood Quilters Guild was called to order by Pres. Angela McCorkle. There were 27 members and 3 guests present. Sherri Marshall moved and Micki Wooldridge seconded that minutes from the August meeting be approved as posted. Millis Schwab moved we approve the treasurer’s report as posted and Joy Ivy seconded. Both motions carried.

Sherry Benbow, Sunshine Chairman reported that a card was sent to member Vita Weehut who suffered a broken arm at the Brownwood Reunion. A card was also passed around for members to sign to send to Mildred Turner.

Nancy Tubb and Angela McCorkle reported that the Mystery Block Quilt will start this month. Members may choose the queen or crib size.

Angela reported the the Quilt Show dates have been changed to April 30th and May 1st, 2011 due to conflict with Easter. Letters to vendors will go out next month. Admissions still needs a chairperson and Vendor Foods needs a coordinator.

Tricia Emery reported the Hospitality Committee is preparing for the Christmas Party at the December meeting. If anyone would like to help with decorating, please contact Tricia or Lynn.

Joyce Kelley reported the program for October will be Wool & Cotton from San Angelo. The Town and Country Quilt Group will also be visiting at the October meeting. Marcia Kaylackie, quilt appraiser will be the program in November.

Several have donated WeeCare quilts but no labels. Millie donated 3 CPS pillowcases.

August 2010 Meeting

Herb Morehead of Marble Falls presented a program on hand dyed fabric at the August meeting of the Brownwood Quilters Guild. Mr. Morehead has been dying fabric for about 30 years and he brought some beautiful pieces of fabric for us to see as well as purchase. It is a fascinating process with gorgeous, as well as surprising, results.

In the afternoon he held a workshop with about 10 members participating. Each person was given 12 fat quarters along with the dye and other supplies needed to dye their fabric. He gave instruction on the dyeing process and sent everyone home with instructions on what to do the next day to complete the process. Next month those that participated will bring their dyed fabric to the meeting to show the guild members the finished result.

AUGUST MEETING
BROWNWOOD QUILTERS GUILD

The August 17th, 2010 meeting of the Brownwood Quilters Guild was called to order by Pres. Angela McCorkle. There were 30 members and 2 guests present. LaTrelle Locks moved and Sherri Marshall seconded that minutes from the July meeting be approved. Ruby Goodwin moved and Nancy Tubb seconded that the treasurer’s report be approved as posted.

Sherry Benbow, Sunshine Chairman reported that a get well card was sent to member Barbara Spinks.

Nancy Tubb, Mystery Quilt chair announced the mystery quilt will begin in September. A signup sheet was passed around and fabric requirements will be emailed to those participating. The duration of the project will be 6 months. Each person participating will bring their completed blocks back to the next meeting for show and tell.

Quilt Show Chair, Angela McCorkle reported that Fran Snay confirmed for the workshop, judging of quilts, and presentation. The Poster Distribution still needs a chair and Bethany Bletsch volunteered to do so. Angela will contact the coliseum to see if the new concession contractors will prepare vendor food. A quilt kit was presented for the 2012 donation quilt.

Patty Stevens from The Quilting House in Breckenridge will present the program for September. She will also conduct a workshop in the afternoon on paper piecing.

It was suggested that show and tell items be displayed on a table so that members may get a close look after the meeting. Any member who would like to receive minutes by snail mail will need to give Doris Rice SASE to receive a copy. Tricia reminded everyone to make donations for door prizes.

June 2010 Meeting

Lori Shelton from Mesquite brought the program at the June meeting of the Brownwood Quilters Guild. Lori was our guest last year when she told the story "It Seams a Mystery". Joyce Kelley showed the finished product of last year's program during our Show and Tell. This year's story "It Seams a Mystery #2" was told as members brought the blocks to the front and a beautiful sampler quilt came together. At the end of the program a drawing was held and Bethany Bletsch was the winner of the sampler blocks and the fabric to set them together.

The July 20, 2010, meeting was the guild's annual covered dish luncheon. Instead of a program, guild members got to enjoy a meal and fellowship with each other!

JULY MEETING
BROWNWOOD QUILTERS GUILD

The July 20th, 2010 meeting of the Brownwood Quilters Guild was called to order by Pres. Angela McCorkle. There were 25 members and 3 guests present. LaTrelle Locks moved and Bethany Bletsch seconded that minutes from the May meeting be approved as corrected. The following corrections were made to the minutes:
Sherri Marshall is chairman of the Magazines Publicity Committee for the Quilt Show and Sherri Marshall is Chairman of Entries not Admissions.

Lynn Patrick moved and Pat Murph seconded that the treasurer’s report be approved as posted.

Sherry Benbow, Sunshine Chairman reported that cards were sent to members Norma Bessent and Barbara Spinks.

Angela presented discussion concerning vendor food at the Quilt Show and suggested that we “take orders” for Subway Sandwiches or something comparable for each vendor. There was also discussion concerning vendor booth fees. Tricia Emery moved that we increase the vendor booth fee to $100. LaTrelle Locks seconded and motion carried. Mildred Turner and Judy Tiedemann will co-chair the guild stash booth. There was also discussion concerning the goodie basket that we raffle at the Quilt Show. Bethany Bletsch moved that guild members donate a “quilty” item for the goodie basket and LaTrelle Locks seconded. Motion carried.

Mildred Turner volunteered to chair the Raffle Quilt 2012 committee. Angela has a potential quilt kit if the guild is interested.

Fran Snay is available for the workshop for the Quilt Show. Her fee is approximately $1000. She will conduct the workshop, “String Quilts”, present a lecture and trunk show on Saturday afternoon and judge the quilts that are entered for judging. All quilts will need to be entered on Thursday instead of Friday so that judging may occur on Friday. Tricia Emery moved we secure Fran Snay. LaTrelle seconded the motion and motion carried.

A discussion was held concerning husbands admission to the Quilt show and it was the consensus that husbands continue to get in free. It was suggested the we secure a male announcer for the Quilt Show. Possible announcers are Jerry DeHay and Chuck Patrick. DVD’s will be available again this year.

Angela presented the Quilt Show report for 2010. Last month a collection was taken for the flowers sent to Linda Brown’s funeral. There was on $30 collected. LaTrelle Locks moved that we reimburse the difference to Bethany for the flowers. Joy Ivy seconded the motion. Motion carried. There was discussion that the “charity change” be changed to the “sunshine fund” beginning January 1st, 2011. Bethany moved that the “charity change” continue as is until January 1st, 2011 and be re-evaluated at that time. Karen Reed seconded the motion. Motion carried. Ruby Goodwin moved that we limit the dollar amount for flowers to $50 plus tax. Judy Tiedmann seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Angela announced that the Mesquite Quilt Show at the Rutherford Community Center is the 4th weekend in June.

Joyce Kelley passed around a sign up for the workshop after the August meeting Fabric Dying with Herb Morehead. Each person needs to bring 3 yards of fabric to dye or pay $10.50 and he will provide the fabric. Each person will go home with 12 dyed fat quarters .

Lori Shelton of Feathered Nest Designs presented the program “Part 2 The Anniversary Mystery Quilt”. Bethany Bletsch won the blocks used in the quilt program.

The May meeting was "housekeeping" for the Guild. New bylaws that have been in process for a long time were finally passed and officers for the coming year were elected.

The new officers are: President, Angela McCorkle; Vice-President, Joyce Kelley; and Doris Rice, Secretary/Treasurer.

A few more "brown bag challenge" projects were presented including the thread catcher shown made by Tricia Emery for Joy Ivy.

BROWNWOOD QUILTERS GUILD
STANDING RULES AND BY-LAWSFormed in May, 1984
Revised in May, 2010 / February 2011

I.Name
The organization shall be called the Brownwood Quilters Guild (the Guild).

II.Purpose
The Guild is organized for the appreciation and education of quilting.

III. MeetingsRegular meetings will be held on the third Tuesday of each month in the Fellowship Hall, First Christian Church, 2411 Coggin Avenue, Brownwood, Texas, at 9:30 a.m.

IV. Membership
The membership will be open to anyone who is interested in the knowledge of the area of quilting and who desires the fellowship of other quilters. Members in good standing have the privilege of voting and holding office, will be notified of Guild activities, and can participate in and support the projects and activities of the Guild. Annual dues of $24.00 are due and pay able at the June meeting. After two visits, visitors are requested to join with dues prorated for the remaining months.

V. Elected Officers
Any member in good standing for one year shall be eligible to hold office. In April, a nominating committee consisting of three (3) members shall be requested from the floor. No current officer may serve on the nominating committee. The committee will elect a chairman.
In May, the nominating committee shall present their slate of officers to be voted on by the membership. New officers shall assume their duties beginning June 1st through May 31st which coincides with the fiscal year of the guild. The elected officers will be the standing members of the Executive Committee. The elected officers are as follows:
A. Guild President
1. Preside over all meetings.
2. Appoint standing committees.

B. Vice-President/Program Chair
1. Preside over meetings in the absence of the President.
2. Secure programs.

C. Secretary/Treasurer1. Keep minutes of all meetings and make available to members.
2. Make bank deposits and disbursements as needed keeping accurate records and provide a Treasurer’s Report to the membership each month.
3. Prepare yearbook and distribute to members.

VI. Committees
The President will appoint all general committees.

VII. Standing Committees
A. Sunshine Committee
1. Send cards to members in response to major events in their lives.

B. Hospitality Committee1. Greet visitors at general meetings.
2. Coordinate and oversee all parties and/or food related activities.

C. Guild Membership Quilt Selection CommitteeTo encourage prompt payment of Guild dues, a quilt top will be given away at the June meeting to one member chosen by a drawing of all names that have paid their dues at that time. The total price should not exceed $100 without prior approval.

D. Community Service Projects
The selection of the specific charitable organizations supported must be approved by the general membership.

E. Quilt Show Committee

1. Quilt Show Chair – Oversee and/or perform the necessary activities required to promote the annual quilt show. The Quilt Show Chair will be authorized to delegate the necessary tasks required to accomplish the end result.

2. Quilt Show Proceeds –a. Proceeds from the Donation quilt, after all expenses have been met, shall be utilized for the programs for the Guild for the upcoming year.
b. All other proceeds from the Quilt Show shall be deposited into the Guild account and set aside for use in the promotion of the Quilt Show the following year.

F. Publicity Committee1. Coordinate Community Calendar monthly notices with the local newspaper.
2. Perform other publicity activities of the Guild not related to the quilt show.

G. Website CommitteeThe Brownwood Quilters Guild shall maintain a website. The committee can post pictures or names of members and general activities of the guild as they deem appropriate taking personal privacy and security into consideration. Any member who does not want her name or picture posted should contact the Committee.

H. Executive Committee
1. Will meet at the discretion of the President to address unforeseen issues between regularly scheduled meetings.
2. Propose a yearly budget for Guild approval at the beginning of each fiscal year.

VIII. Financial Policies
The President, Vice-President and Secretary/Treasurer will be authorized to sign checks. No one should sign checks to themselves.

IX. Other PoliciesA. Copyright – The Guild supports compliance with the Copyright Law.

B. Bylaws – The bylaws may be altered, amended or repealed and new bylaws may be adopted by a majority of the members voting in any regular meeting. Any proposed changes to the bylaws must be presented to the members at least one month prior to voting on said changes.

C. Disbandment – Should the Brownwood Quilters Guild disband, all monies remaining after payment of any outstanding expenses shall be donated to another non-profit organization to be decided by the members present at the final meeting.

2010 QUILT SHOW RESULTS

Pictured above is a quilt entered by Mary Laminack from Marble Falls, Texas named “Stars for A New Day”, and was selected Best of Show, received the Guild Choice Award and won first place in it’s category at the Sixth Annual Heart of Texas Quilt Show held April 24th and 25th at the Brownwood Coliseum. Attendee’s on Saturday voted on their favorite quilt in each category and their favorite overall. Mary’s quilt was selected as the overall viewer’s favorite quilt from 160 entries. This quilt was a block of the month kit offered designed by Sue Garmon and offered through the Alex Anderson/Ricky Timms website. This quilt is entirely paperpieced and Mary indicated that each month’s patterns took approximately 20-25 hours to complete. Mary’s quilt was quilted by Angela McCorkle from Priddy, Texas. The quilt raffle was won by Gloria Lilly of Brownwood, Texas.

We also had a Quilter’s Goodie Basket that was being given away. The donations collected for the goodie basket will go into our Charity Change fund to be given to the Toys for Kids Program in December. We collected $275.00.

A workshop was held in conjunction with the show, More Hand Applique by Machine, based on the book by Beth Ferrier of the same name. The class was taught by Angela McCorkle of Quilts With a Heart in Priddy, Texas. Classes were conducted at the Girl Scout House on Avenue D on both Saturday and Sunday mornings.

The Brownwood Quilter’s Guild would like to thank the many volunteers of the guild (and our wonderful husbands) and businesses who helped make this event possible, specifically, the Brownwood Chamber of Commerce, Mills County State Bank, and the Brownwood Bulletin for their outstanding coverage of our show. We would also like to thank the vendors at our show, The Cuttin’ Patch, Bluebonnet Merchantile, Austin Sewing Machines, Nana’s Parcels, Material Girls Fabrics, Tomorrows Quilts, Quilts with A Heart, Alto’s Cutting Systems, Snips & Pins, Cotton Theroy, Two Sister’s quilting, and the Quilting Queen, without our vendors, there would be no show. The show was a great success and the guild looks forward to an even better show next year. If you didn’t get a chance to come to the show this year, mark us on your calendar for the last weekend in April, 2011 and come see what you missed and don’t forget about the workshops!

MEETING MINUTES

Meeting was called to order at 9:00 a.m. by Joyce Kelley, Vice President in the absence of the President, Bethany Bletsch.

Roll was called. Leah West and Laura West were visitors.

Meeting minutes from the April 20, 2010 meeting were previously e-mailed to members for review. Doris Rice made the motion to accept the minutes as presented, LaTrelle Locks seconded the motion, motion carried.

Treasurer’s report and amendment to the Treasurer’s Report was previously emailed to members for review. An explanation of the changes was provided. Ruby Goodwin made the motion to accept the report as presented. Pat Murph seconded the motion, motion carried.

STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS:

1.Quilt Show Report. The final report was not reviewed at this time. A final report will be made available at the next meeting.

2.Sunshine Report – A get well card was sent to Joyce Kelley.

3.Wee Care Project. Three new quilts were received today and given to Joy Ivy to present to the Hospital. Jonna Burkes indicated that the current labels used on the wee care quilts do not correctly reflect what was originally approved to be on the labels. It appears that they have been changed over the years due to problems with the ink used and then trying to get them to print off the computer. With the assistance of her son, she was able to get the labels to print correctly and pending approval of the group, will volunteer to provide the labels for the wee care quilts. Lynn Patrick made the motion to accept the new label, Jeanie Ortegon seconded the motion, motion carried.

4.Program Report. Report was presented by Joyce Kelley. A fabric vendor from the quilt show by the name of Herb Moorehead indicated he would be available to do a program for the guild and a hand-dying workshop after the conclusion of the program. If enough members are interested we will schedule him to come. Several members indicated their desire to attend. Joyce will contact him and get him scheduled.

5.Strips/Charm Exchange. The final strips and charms are available for those who participated to pick up.

6.CPS Report. No report was presented.

GENERAL BUSINESS:

1.A set of revised bylaws were previously distributed to members. Copies were made available for members who do no have email. Norma Bessent, chairperson of this committee, presented the bylaws by sections for approval of the guild. The vote for approval is as follows: Ruby Goodwin made the motion that Sections 1-4 be approved as read, Joy Ivy seconded, motion carried. Latrelle Locks made the motion that Section 5 be approved as read, Lynn Patrick seconded the motion, motion carried. Lynn Patrick made the motion that Sections 6 – 7 be approved as read, Ruby Goodwin seconded the motion, motion carried. Tricia Emery made the motion that sections 8-9 be approved as read, Ruby Goodwin seconded the motion, motion carried. Newly revised By-laws stand approved as read. A finalized copy of the bylaws will be distributed with the updated 2010-11 Guild Directory.

2.The members who participated in the Brown Bag Challenge that did not exchange their project last month, did so at this time.

3.The nominating committee represented by LaTrelle Locks presented their nominations for officers for the 2010-11 year. They are as follows: President – Angela McCorkle; Vice President – Joyce Kelley; Secretary/Treasurer – Doris Rice. Nominations were requested from the floor. MEETING MINUTES

Meeting was called to order at 9:00 a.m. by Bethany Bletsch, President.
Roll was called. No visitors were present.
Meeting minutes from the March 16,2010 meeting were previously e-mailed to
members for review. Latrelle Locks made the motion to accept the minutes with the
correction that the correction that the by-laws committee met, not executive board, Miilie
Schwabb seconded the motion, motion carried.
Treasurer's report was previously emailed to members for review. Jeannie
Ortegon made the motion to accept the report as presented. LaTrelle Locks seconded the
motion, motion carried.

STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS:
1. Quilt Show Report. A show update was provided by Angela McCorkle.
a. Sign Up Sheets were made available for members to volunteer for the various
areas to work at the quilt show.
b. New T-shirts were available and distributed to members who previously
ordered them.
c. Discussed the purchase of dark sheets to hang on the display racks for the
shorter/smaller quilts. Sherry Benbow made the motion to purchase, La'Irelle
Locks seconded, motion carried.
d. Discussed setting aside funds from each quilt show to replace racks. This
issue was tabled to be discussed at a later meeting.
e. Discussed how the viewer's choice ballots are counted. It was determined
that the method used in previous years would continue.
f Volunteers to count monies received at quilt show was requested. Sherri
Marshall and Doris Rice volunteered.
g. Due to the passing of Linda Brown, Benita Pipes will take over the Stash
Booth for this year's show. Donations to the booths are to continue to be
handled in the same manner as previous years.
h. Due to extenuating circumstances, Marilynn DeHay will be unable to provide
the food for the Vendor Concessions. Joy Early, Pam McGhee and Bertha
Hall have agreed to assume these responsibilities.
1. Requested a volunteer to head the committee for the 2012 donation quilt. No
volunteers received at this time.

5. Program Report. Report was presented by Joyce Kelley. After the meeting
in May we will be staying after to construct the blocks for the Mystery Quilt
program in June. Those that want to stay and work on these blocks will get
their name in the drawing in addition to having their name in the drawing for
being paid members.
6. Strips/Charm Exchange. The final strips and charms will be available at the
next meeting.
7. CPS Report. Report was presented by Jeannie Ortegon. She took a bag of
sample/trial size shampoos, conditioner, lotions, etc. that you receive from
hotels to CPS for use in their rainbow room. A thank you note from CPS was
received for this donation. A list of items needed for the rainbow room was
published in the paper. Jeannie will get a copy of this list and provide it to the
appropriate website person to add to our site.

GENERAL BUSINESS:

1. The Executive Committee has met and prepared a rough draft of the new bylaws.
A draft of the revised by-laws has been previously emailed to
members. Discussion followed concerning revisions to the by-laws. After
lengthy discussion, it was determined that the committee will reconvene,
revise this draft to reflect the guild's comments/suggestions during this
meeting and present a revision to the guild prior to next month's meeting to be
reviewed. Additional members were added to this committee, they were
Nancy Tubbs and Doris Rice.

2. Website Advertising - No report is available at this time.

NEW BUSINESS

1. There is a new quilt shop in Cypress. There is also a new quilt shop in Marble
Falls called The 9-Patch.
2. Volunteers for the Nominating Committee were requested. They are as follows:
Sherri Marshall, LaTrelle Locks, and Doris Rice.
3. Dues for 2010-11 will be due atthe May meeting.

MEMBERS AT THE APRIL MEETING SHOWED OFF THEIR COMPLETED "BROWN BAG CHALLENGE" PROJECTS. TWO MONTHS AGO, BAGS CONTAINING SEVERAL FABRIC CHOICES WERE EXCHANGED. THE CHALLENGE WAS TO MAKE SOMETHING FOR THE PERSON CHOSEN USING THE FABRIC IN THE BAG. THE TALENTED MEMBERS MADE A VARIETY OF ITEMS INCLUDING PURSES, APRONS, TABLE RUNNERS AND SMALL QUILTS. JUST A FEW OF THESE BEAUTIES ARE SHOWN BELOW:

MARCH 2010 MEETING

The March meeting featured Julie Keeter, a retired florist from Throckmorton. After trying different craft hobbies that just didn't work for her, she tried quilting and found her passion. Julie's new love lead to her purchasing a long-arm quilting machine and then on to designing her own patterns for aprons and jackets. She also teaches classes on her versatile jackets that can be adjusted to different sizes and styles. Visitors are welcome to visit her home studio where her patterns and fabric can be purchased. Members were able to shop and enjoy many of Julie's examples of her work. A number of her beautiful quilts are shown below.

The Brownwood Quilt Show is scheduled for April 24-25 and members will be asked to sign up at next month's meeting for various duties. A "stash" sale will be held again at the show where members can bring their items to be sold. This is a good time to clean out the stash and everyone can find some treasures to take home.

Tickets are still on sale for the beautiful donation quilt and may be purchased from any member or at the show. The drawing will be held at the end of the day on Sunday, April 25, at the show.

MEETING MINUTES

Meeting was called to order at 9:00 a.m. by Bethany Bletsch, President.

Roll was called. Visitors included Jackie Campbell, Judy Tiedeman and Camron Bills.

Meeting minutes from the February 16, 2010 meeting were previously e-mailed to members for review. Joy Ivy made the motion to accept the minutes as presented, Joy Early seconded the motion, motion carried.

Treasurer’s report was previously emailed to members for review. Barbara Spinks made the motion to accept the report as presented. Doris Rice seconded the motion, motion carried.

STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS:

1.Quilt Show Report. A show update was provided by Angela McCorkle.

a.Joyce Kelley presented an update concerning the donation quilt. The quilt will be taken to the Rattlesnake Roundup this weekend and sign up sheets for working were made available for volunteers

b.Received confirmation from the Early Chamber that they will not assist us in this endeavor. However, should we decide to do a show at the mall, they would be interested in assisting up.

c.Reminder to members about bringing articles for the Stash Sale

d.Ribbons that have been finished by Millie Schwab were made available for members to see.

e.Discussed the option of having a judge select the Best of Show Quilt. It was determined that insufficient time was available to have a judge for this year and that the show was already being advertised as a viewers choice. This issue will be revisited after this year’s quilt show.

f.Members were reminded to sign up for their quilt show t-shirts.

5.Strip/Charm Exchange – Last month we tabled the decision to continue or discontinue the Strip/Charm exchange programs. This issue was discussed. At this time it was determine to discontinue this program. Will revisit again at a later time if more members become interested.

GENERAL BUSINESS:

1.The Executive Committee has met and prepared a rough draft of the new by-laws. The committee will be sending these out in the next few weeks for guild review and preparation for discussion/approval at the April meeting.

2.Discussed establishing a committee to set rates for website advertising. Volunteers were requested. Doris Rice and Angela McCorkle volunteered to chair this committee.

NEW BUSINESS
1.Announcement was made of guild members “In the News” as follows – Joy Early is an officer of the Texas Education Extension club; Angela McCorkle has been appointed to the Tourism Board for the Brownwood Chamber of Commerce.

2.The TEEA is hosting its annual spud sale on 3-30. Need to call by 3-23 to order potatoes. The numbers are 325-646-7410 or 646-0386.

3.Jonna Burkes announced that she will be remaining after the guild meeting to assist any member who would like additional instruction for needle turn appliqué.

FEBRUARY 2010 MEETING

The February meeting featured the Secret Sister reveal culminating a year of fun gifts from friends. The "Brown Bag Challenge" project was started with two months to complete. Everyone participating brought a brown bag filled with some coordinating fabric. The bags were mixed and everyone choose a different bag to take home and make something for the bag owner. It will be fun to see what masterpieces are created by this talented group of ladies. A potluck luncheon followed the meeting with delicious sandwiches, salads, side dishes and desserts. Yummo!

Sherri Marshall - "Shooting Starts" from Debbie Maddy workshop. Quilted by Angela McCorkle.

Doris Rice - "Pioneer Sampler" by Eleanor Burns. Pieced and quilted by Doris.

Doris Rice - "Bluebonnet Lone Star" pieced and quilted by Doris. She will be teaching a class on this technique at the Quilting House in Breckenridge.

Linda Brown showed a crazy quilt throw that her daughters made.

Angela McCorkle - "American Beauty". This will be a BOM available from Quilts with a Heart. Pieced by Doris Rice and quilted by Angela.

Pat Karnes - "Fun and Don" quilt is finally DONE! This quilt was from a class at The Flying Needle in Stephenville taked by several members in 2008.

Pat Karnes completed a "Dick and Jane" quilt to hang in her quilt room

Nancy Tubb - "Criss Cross" This quilt is made from batiks and was a kit purchased at the Houston International Quilt Show. It was quilted by Doris Rice.

Millie Schwab made this "Cats" quilts for her granddaugther. There are 89 cats. It was quilted by Angela McCorkle.

Joyce Kelley said she would rather make 10 quilt blocks than one apron!

MEETING MINUTES

Meeting was called to order at 9:00 a.m. by Bethany Bletsch, President.

Roll was called. Visitors included Kathy, Linda Brown’s daughter.

Meeting minutes from the January 19, 2010 meeting were previously e-mailed to members for review. One correction was noted that being that the website address is www.brownwoodquiltersguild.org, not .com as noted in the minutes. Benita Pipes made the motion to accept the minutes as corrected, Joy Early seconded the motion, motion carried.

Treasurer’s report was previously emailed to members for review. Nancy Tubb made the motion to accept the report as presented. Sherry Benbow seconded the motion, motion carried.

STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS:

1. Quilt Show Report. A show update was provided by Angela McCorkle.
a. Joyce Kelley presented an update concerning the donation quilt. If any one knows of an events or group where the quilt can be taken to sell tickets, please contact Joyce.

b.Chamber requests for funding have been submitted. We have received confirmation from the Brownwood Chamber that they will be donating $1,200.00, plus goodie bags and paying for having our posters & flyers designed. Have not yet received confirmation from the Early Chamber.

c.Discussed increasing the guilds portion of the stash sale from 10% to 20%. After discussion, Benita Pipes made the motion to increase the percentage from 10% to 20%, Latrelle Locks seconded the motion, motion carried.

2.Sunshine Report – Get well cards were sent to Foncile Roling who is in the hospital recovering from a stroke and doing well and to Jeanie Ortegon.

3.Wee Care Project. Bethany Bletsch presented this report. Received four quilts one from Benita, Latrelle, Pat and Millie. Receiving blankets from Sherry Benbow.

GENERAL BUSINESS:

1. The officers are still working on the by-laws, and will be meeting at the conclusion of the meeting to review what has been established. Hope to have something to present to group in the next couple of months.

2. The guild website is up and running!!!! To view it go to www.brownwoodquiltersguild.org .

3. Discussed the continuation of the Secret Sister Program for next year. It was decided that it would continue. The reveal for 2009/10 is today and was made at this time. New forms were available for those members who wised to participate for the 2010/2011 year.

4. Barbara Spinks has a new email, it is b--------s@dishmail.net.

5. Strip/Charm club for upcoming year was discussed. It was decided to table this subject until the next meeting.

NEW BUSINESS

1. The Block of the Month Exchange was discussed. Instead of each person doing a block and putting their name in for a drawing, it was suggested that we do a Mystery Quilt and everyone who chose to could participate. Each month you would receive instructions for a block. You choose your fabrics, and you keep your blocks. At the end of the year, everyone who participated would have a quilt top. This program would start in August and conclude in May. Benita Pipes made the motion that we do a Mystery Quilt, LaTrelle Locks seconded the motion, motion carried. Nancy Tubb and Joyce Kelley will be in charge of this project.

2. The Dallas Quilt Show is March 12-14. The Goldthwaite Courthouse Steps quilters will be chartering a bus on March 12. Information concerning departure times and costs are available at the head table. Be sure to pick it up if you are interested in attending.

3. Guild Membership Quilt for 2010 was discussed. Lori Shelton will be back again this year with the second part of her quilt program. Instead of purchasing a second quilt for membership and also doing the drawing for the winner of Lori Shelton’s quilt, it was suggested that Lori Shelton’s quilt be designated as the guild membership quilt. Discussion ensued. Joyce Kelley made the motion that Lori Shelton’s quilt be the membership quilt, Benita Pipes seconded the motion, motion carried.

BASIC QUILTING TERMINOLOGY

1. BOM – Block of the Month

2. Fat Quarter – Piece of fabric measuring 18” x 22”.

3. Fat Eighth – Piece of fabric measuring 9” x 22”.

4. Seam Allowance – Unless otherwise specified, all seams are ¼” wide.

5. UFO – Unfinished projects.

6. PSA – Personal Seam Allowance. This is each individual’s quarter-inch seam allowance as sewn on their machine.

7. RST – Right Sides Together
